Introducing our Spent Grain-ola!

One of the most exciting things about working at the new Food Hub here in Quesnel is the opportunity to dream up ways to create local products and use ingredients in creative ways.  A couple months ago, we launched our first product, which we are calling Spent Grain-ola!

Using spent grain from Barkerville Brewery in Quesnel, we are putting our commercial dehydrator to good use and turning a local waste product into a new food business that will help support Sprout Kitchen operations.  Our goal was to come up with something unique that uses local ingredients and equipment available at Sprout Kitchen.

So, what is spent grain?  It is the grain that is left over after the beer brewing process.  Brewing extracts most of the sugars from the grain, so what you are left with is a product that is high in protein and fiber and low in sugar.  Spent grain is quickly becoming popular as a health food!  There are innovative companies popping up all over Canada and the United States that are creating lots of different food products made with spent grain.

We are excited to develop this granola business here at Sprout Kitchen and we hope this can expand into other products.  We are selling the granola weekly at the Quesnel Farmers Market as well as several stores in the Quesnel area.  If you are interested in bulk or wholesale granola, please contact us!
